Similar to bad weather hit the north-west the night before, the home side swept the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three goal triumph for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a result that clearly signaled their title credentials as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for Manchester United

This result marked back-to-back Women's Super League setbacks for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since last May, putting them seven points off the league leaders with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

Manchester United's capability to balance league and European football with a small team has been a widely debated issue since they earned a place in the European competition. Reviewing the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the opposition, they seemed tired from start to finish, the historic win against PSG clearly having left its mark.

Lineup Adjustments

Skinner had attempted to make changes with a a few alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the exclusion of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench caused surprise.

The hosts, in opposition, have fewer fitness concerns. Andrée Jeglertz made one change from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to accumulate for Skinner and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose energetic offense controlled and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime first half showing that saw them score three goals in just over twenty minutes.

This left the home team completely dominant and left United disorganized. Prior to this match, the away side had allowed just six in this domestic competition but they collapsed in the wake of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came early when Vivianne Miedema used her strength to muscle Julia Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot wide. Hemp was at the heart of everything early on, taking advantage of the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had several sorties ahead, their direct style giving them choices in the flanks but they could not trouble Yamashita. Manchester City, meanwhile, controlled possession, probing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their organization.

Triple Strike

They converted their dominance with almost thirty minutes played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A cross to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to head in. It was City’s 7th goal from a cross of the term.

They extended their lead with two more goals just before the interval. When Rose was permitted to advance through the midfield from central defence, the field became spacious for the hosts. The prominent Casparij collected the pass on the right side before delivering a pinpoint driven ball for Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third after a quick turnover in possession saw Hemp allowed the room to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The clearest substitution came from the United manager at the break as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was too late to change the course of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Park came closest, striking the woodwork, but the away team were lacking in ideas and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to overcome any opponent who finished above them last season, the manager's side now have victories against the Gunners and Manchester United to place them in a favorable standing after the opening fixtures.
