Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
