A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
