The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
